Sometimes people need a break! But my break was too long, and I really should get back to writing again. The thing is that this summer has been a hectic journey of learning and change for me. To make it easier I’ll share a timeline of my summer below:
Early Summer
When people say the last month of school goes by fast, they really mean it. Kinda like a lightning fast memory that moves fast within my mind, but can give me a sort of comforting feeling. Well, why is this feeling comforting, you might think? Because most of the stress of high school is gone into oblivion with introduced events celebrating only you. Senior Prom, Trips, Senior Walk and the Graduation are all curated to celebrate the 4 years of hard work put into high school, but also as a last hurrah. All these events were fun and all, but I was just ready to start the summer.
Summer
Some words to describe summer? Timeless-as in the activities have a sameness about them(like waterparks), Zephyr- a word from my favorite Madonna song(Ray of Light) that describes the familiar light breeze in the air, and Optimistic – ; this summer was all that plus smoldering hot. I made it a mission to myself to go to New York City as much as possible to get acclimated to commuting for college. These trips to New York City were really fun, going to Central Park with friends, Dumbo with my cousin and Hudson Yards alone. I learned that while walking through the city I don’t have to be with others to have fun. Just walking alone with my headphones in, looking at the Manhattan Skyline.
Reflecting
This summer was the time of friendships and loneliness. I often had time with others, discovering new spots on the Island (Long Island not Hawaii), such as the grand Oheka castle, the simplicity of local eateries and museums, such as the Island’s local Gregory Museum. Though much time was spent with friends, even more of my time was spent alone. But it wasn’t the terrible loneliness filled with nothingness. It was the type of loneliness where you’d think about your own creative ventures and moving past your goals ahead. In my time alone I often write songs, stories, read or research, which is a time when I learned to enjoy my own company. Growing up, I used to always say “I’m bored”, and now I say “I’m reaching my goals!”
Saying Goodbye and Starting New Beginnings
The start of university means saying goodbye to your old friends and learning a new style of communication. Distance doesn’t mean you have to salvage old friendships, but it just puts the strength of friendship to the test. Weekly hangouts do, unfortunately, turn into bi-weekly calls, but that’s miles of space for you. The excitement of going to college in Manhattan shielded my worries about the upcoming school year, but a shield is always temporary. So wish me luck in college I guess. 🙂
Future Goals
- Finish writing my debut EP and album. It will be based on some songs I wrote in the past few years, hopefully I’ll get signed! (Done by next year!)
- Make new friends in college! And, of course, get good grades and get involved, but that’s a given.
